Campus Geometry Inspiring Artistic Experience

The ‘L’-shaped geometry of the Glassell School of Art defines a pivotal campus space at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, shaping circulation while guiding visitors along an inclined plane to the campus overlook terrace. The design establishes a clear relationship between movement, structure and landscape — reinforcing the space’s role as both connector and destination.

Wells partnered with the design team to implement a prefabricated structural and facade system that expresses this geometry with clarity and discipline. Planar exterior elements trace the angle of the main incline, subtly referencing the adjacent sculpture garden walls by Isamu Noguchi. Alternating with expansive translucent glazing, these prefabricated planes deliver diffused light to studio spaces while maintaining a strong architectural rhythm.
