Engineering Vision into a Healing Environment

The Alice L. Walton School of Medicine is redefining medical education by integrating holistic approaches with traditional practices. Since its founding in 2021, the space has offered a comprehensive four-year medical program that blends conventional medicine with wellness and self-care strategies.

Wells partnered with the design team to ensure the prefabricated facade system supported the project’s vision while maintaining schedule and budget requirements. This collaboration helped coordinate critical elements of the steel package and kept construction on track.

The prefabricated facade system was designed to create dynamic depth and visual interest. Multiple pattern types were strategically arranged to reflect the building’s overall layout, with panels featuring varied geometries and recesses to enhance texture and shadow. Wells provided a range of color and finish options — balancing textured sandblast with smooth acid-etched surfaces — to achieve a cohesive and visually engaging facade.

Additional prefabricated elements, including coping, cap pieces, and self-supported stair components, were integrated seamlessly, providing smooth transitions and complementing the overall facade design.

The space itself draws inspiration from the Ozark landscape, with architectural forms and outdoor areas that echo the surrounding environment. Rooftop parks, trails, and thoughtfully designed outdoor spaces connect the medical campus to the nearby forest, creating opportunities for community engagement and promoting wellness. Elevated ridges and canopies provide shade, scenic views, and accessible circulation for pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles.

Through collaboration and expertise, Wells helped bring this vision to life — delivering a space that balances innovative medical education with a strong connection to its natural surroundings.
