Precision Meets Endurance

The Pavilions, the second phase of the Glenstone Museum, spans 204,000 sq ft and includes galleries, a central water court, contemplative rooms, office space, and a library. The owners sought a design of lasting value that would harmonize with the surrounding landscape, and the Thomas Phifer team responded with a custom architectural precast facade.

Wells crafted the complex facade with over 23,000 interlocking blocks forming exterior and interior walls. Each block, ranging from 300 lb for interior pieces to 900 lb for exterior, was individually poured from over 900 modeled elements to a precise tolerance of 1/32”, creating subtle variations in texture and color without added pigment. Roughly 1,400 blocks feature unique markings that required careful tracking throughout design, manufacturing, shipping, and installation. A custom Wells-engineered connection allowed for post-installation adjustment, ensuring alignment within the 3/8” jointing, while erection crews averaged installation of 20 pieces per day.
