Strength, Security, and Permanence
The Iowa State Penitentiary complex reflects the state’s commitment to safety, security, and long-term performance. Designed to replace the original 19th-century facility in Fort Madison, this modern maximum-security space brings together thoughtful design, durable materials, and forward-thinking construction practices to support the needs of staff and residents while enhancing public safety.
Wells partnered with the design team to deliver an architectural solution with inlaid brick — creating a durable and efficient envelope that balances security with design intent. The system provides exceptional thermal performance and energy efficiency, supporting the facility’s operational goals in Iowa’s variable climate. The inlaid brick finish conveys a sense of permanence and continuity with the site’s architectural history, honoring the penitentiary’s long-standing role in the community.
