Hyperrealistic, Durable, and Modular Urban Training

The P1479 Outdoor Infantry Immersion Trainer at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, immerses Marines in the sights, sounds, odors, and physical environments of urban battlefields. Situated adjacent to the Mobile Military Operations on Urbanized Terrain complex, the five-acre site replicates a North African village with 51 buildings and 129 rooms. Its intentionally chaotic, labyrinthine layout challenges Marines to navigate organically, with varied room sizes, offset buildings, and nonstandard staircases, doors, and window openings, creating an authentic urban environment that promotes adaptability, critical thinking, and tactical decision-making.

Wells provided 49 relocatable, precast concrete structures that form the backbone of the training. The fully precast structures provide durability, modularity, and authenticity at the core of the training environment, with the ability to withstand rotorwash, fast-roping, rooftop insertions, vehicle loads, and the daily wear and tear of intensive training. To enhance environmental realism, four mix colors and four formliners were used to achieve a geo-specific, war-torn appearance, while varied textures and faux appurtenances, coordinated with the architect and a Hollywood atmospheric expert, give the structures the appearance of being fifty years old. Holes and battle damage were incorporated to replicate explosion effects, and the buildings collectively recreate a range of urban environments, including higher-income areas, mosques, markets, government buildings, and slums. The trainin facility also integrates non-live fire systems, virtual simulation, sound, LED lighting, odor-generation, and role players to support decision-making, small-unit exercises, and after-action reviews.
