Shaping Justice with Strength and Grace
This 413,000 sq ft U.S. Courthouse in Jackson, Mississippi, stands as a powerful reflection of balance — modern precision rooted in Southern tradition. Bringing together nineteen federal agencies, the courthouse is organized around an open-air rotunda that connects two offset wings, whose forms are angled in harmony with the natural contours of nearby Town Creek. Set on axis with the Mississippi State Capitol’s Beaux-Arts dome just seven blocks north, the courthouse reinterprets classical civic architecture for a new era. Its sweeping curves and light-filled volumes create a dignified, contemporary counterpoint to Jackson’s historic landmarks — an inspiring symbol of justice built to endure.
At the heart of the design are twelve stacked courtrooms, each enclosed by curved prefabricated walls that define the building’s architectural character. None of the panels were set at a perfect 90-degree angle; instead, the building incorporates up to 10 distinct angles. The typical panel, weighing around 18,000 pounds, was post-tensioned and hung from the top to achieve the project’s intricate geometry. This precision allowed the space’s curving form to take shape with strength and elegance, demonstrating the true potential of prefabricated systems.
