Honoring History, Strengthening Legacy
Standing proudly along Richmond’s Capitol Square, the new Virginia General Assembly Building carries forward more than a century of civic heritage while creating a state-of-the-art home for the Commonwealth’s legislature. The 15-story, 414,000 sq ft structure replaces a series of outdated, adjoined buildings with a unified, efficient design that preserves the site’s historic identity and reinforces its lasting role in state governance.
Two limestone facades from the original 1912 building — featuring intricate Corinthian pilasters, American Eagles, and winged horses — were carefully preserved and integrated into the new facade. Wells collaborated closely with the design team to match the color, finish, and profile alignment of the original stonework, ensuring a seamless visual transition between past and present.
