Shaped by Landscape and Wellness

At the University of Central Florida’s Academic Health Sciences Campus in Lake Nona, the Dr. Phillips Nursing Pavilion stands as a testament to what’s possible when purpose, collaboration, and regional connection align. As the design-assist partner for the project’s architectural precast facade, Wells helped bring to life a facility that expands UCF’s capacity to educate and empower the next generation of nurses while strengthening the built community that supports them. The 90,000 sq ft building reflects a shared commitment to innovation in healthcare education and the belief that design can advance both learning and wellness.

The building facade takes inspiration from the surrounding landscape and has an organic, dynamic quality that connects it to its context. Its arched form mirrors the softer shapes of Lake Nona Boulevard, the circular College of Medicine, and the elliptical green of the campus quad. The entire structure is lifted to create a shaded “porch,” offering comfort and gathering space while protecting students and faculty from the Florida sun—an architectural expression of both function and welcome.

Wells worked closely with the design and construction team to deliver a facade system grounded in durability, efficiency, and visual character. The architectural precast features a combination of glass-blast and sand-blast finishes, adding depth and texture that respond dynamically to the region’s natural light. Accents with coquina shell aggregate introduce a distinctly regional material expression, connecting the pavilion to its local environment and the state’s coastal heritage.

The result is a structure that embodies the values of collaboration and ingenuity. Through off-site fabrication, Wells ensured consistent quality and efficient installation while minimizing disruption to the active campus. Early design-assist involvement allowed the team to align the façade’s performance and aesthetic with the project’s broader goals, ensuring the final product delivered both technical excellence and design intent.

As a new hub for healthcare education, the Dr. Phillips Nursing Pavilion supports UCF’s mission to expand access to high-quality nursing programs and meet the growing demand for skilled professionals across Central Florida. It’s a building that not only serves students and faculty but also stands as an enduring symbol of how thoughtful, efficient construction can transform bold ideas into lasting realities.
