A Facade That Evolves With Light and Season

The Science and Technology Center is a three-story dry laboratory and classroom facility organized around a light-filled central atrium. Originally envisioned with a terracotta rainscreen along the south facade, the exterior strategy evolved to meet performance goals, budget considerations, and the need for an integrated barrier system.

Wells partnered closely with the design team to reimagine the façade, aligning architectural intent with constructability, performance, and long-term value. By leveraging prefabrication expertise and early collaboration, Wells delivered a unified exterior solution that balanced durability, thermal efficiency, and visual impact without sacrificing design ambition.

Panel surfaces were intentionally sculpted to introduce depth and texture, activating light and shadow throughout the day and across seasons. A single concrete mix, paired with acid-etched and sandblasted finishes, allowed for controlled color variation while maintaining consistency and constructability.
