Iconic and Timeless Design

Lucas Oil Stadium is a 63,000-seat, retractable-roof, multipurpose stadium designed to expand to 73,000 seats for marquee events, such as the 2012 Super Bowl, and to adjust sightlines for 70,000 seats during NCAA Final Four tournaments. With over 150,000 sq ft of convention floor area and planned direct connections to the Indianapolis Convention Center, the stadium integrates seamlessly into the city’s original radial street pattern.

Wells created the exterior facade, which features thermal sandwich, pre-insulated architectural precast panels with thin jumbo bricks and simulated Indiana limestone accents. The brick facade was chosen to harmonize with historic downtown Indianapolis garment district buildings, paying homage to venerable collegiate football stadia and fieldhouses across the Midwest. At the arched entrances, Wells incorporated limestone joint detailing, and careful mockups ensured precise arched brick coursing. The manganese ironspot thin brick complements traditional hand-laid brick, creating a detailed and elegant exterior expression.
