Pioneering Sustainable Design in Campus Parking

This parking space on Duke University’s campus set a national precedent as the first free-standing, single-use parking facility certified by the U.S. Green Building Council, earning 31 LEED points. Developed within the medical campus research zone, the 1,917-space garage demonstrates how thoughtful design and off-site construction can elevate essential infrastructure within the built community.

Wells supported the development with the design team to support a facade approach that aligned with both sustainability goals and campus context. The neutral-toned prefabricated building facade system helps mitigate the heat island effect while blending with surrounding campus architecture. From a distance, the facade presents a cohesive, monolithic expression. Up close, a medium sandblast finish reveals subtle aggregate variation, adding depth and visual interest at a more human scale.
