Form, Function, and Safety in Harmony

Academic Health Center 5 (AHC5), part of Florida International University’s master plan expansion, serves as a gateway to a growing health sciences precinct. Designed to connect existing campus buildings with new development, AHC4 and AHC5 were envisioned to function in community — architecturally and academically — reinforcing the collaborative mission of the colleges they house.

The six-story structure is defined by its curvilinear massing and rhythmic alternation of architectural concrete panels and glass. From the courtyard, the facade evokes a white windsail, responding directly to South Florida’s climate. As the exterior wraps eastward, the facade expression transitions into prominent solar shading fins, balancing daylight, heat control, and visual continuity across the precinct.
