Elevating School Safety

As the first project completed under a $145 million bond initiative, Roosevelt Elementary’s new addition is more than a gym — it’s a life-saving, code-compliant ICC 500 storm shelter. Designed to protect every student and staff member, it replaces the school’s previous emergency tunnels, which were not ADA-accessible.

Wells delivered the facility in just eight days during the winter season, creating a durable, welcoming space for students and staff. Thoughtfully designed walls and finishes bring cohesion, resilience, and comfort to this high-traffic educational environment. Distinctive textures and cast-in lettering add character and visual interest, enhancing the building’s aesthetic while ensuring long-term durability. Details like embedded components help maintain a clean, functional design suited to an active school setting.

Built to meet strict ICC 500 standards, the addition is designed to withstand extreme weather while protecting its occupants. The strength and stability of precast building solutions help resist uplift forces, providing reliable protection without unnecessary complexity.

This innovative addition enhances the safety and functionality of Roosevelt Elementary while showing how thoughtful design and durable materials can create inspiring, long-lasting learning spaces.
