Precast Meets Campus Heritage

Wells partnered with The University of Alabama and the project team to deliver the Tutwiler Parking Deck, the first phase of a multi-phase campus initiative supporting future residential and dining facilities for students. The seven-level structure provides 1,452 parking spaces across 511,800 sq ft while reinforcing the University’s long-standing architectural identity within its historic core.

The structural system utilizes cast-in-place concrete, complemented by a highly articulated architectural precast facade composed of 517 prefabricated panels. Each panel incorporates embedded thin brick using a University of Alabama brick blend, paired with limestone-style accents to reflect the scale, rhythm and permanence of the University’s century-old neoclassical buildings. According to Neil King of Evan Terry Associates, “We were able to give this structure the same strength and permanence as the original century-old buildings still standing on the university’s campus.”
