Combining Form and Function

Boston Scientific is not only the largest employer in Maple Grove, MN, but it’s also the largest of its kind in the northwest suburbs. When the medical device company needed to make a significant addition to an existing building, Wells partnered to deliver innovative, efficient solutions.

For the nearly 50,000 sq ft addition, Wells quickly delivered a roll cast brick facade. To support the project vision, the Wells team also provided wall panels and an innovative feature of three sides of brick standing approximately 40’ tall. Working alongside the project team, Wells helped realize a true monolithic design that unified the building envelope and expression. The approach supports expansive vertical openings that draw natural light into the building, while establishing a strong, cohesive exterior rhythm that enhances durability and architectural clarity.

Throughout the project, the team overcame several challenges: multiple roll-cast and sequential-pour brick panels; the project was set on a tight site adjacent to a hill; and several panels weighed nearly 80,000 pounds, requiring the team to reach approximately 100 feet to place them. The installation and erection took just under two months to complete, allowing other trades fast access to the facility and reinforcing the value of an efficient, well-coordinated partnership.

The final addition is a continuous extension of the existing campus, meeting aesthetic, budget, and schedule goals, in support of the growth and expansion plans of this leading medical device manufacturer.
