Monumental Presence, Lasting Impact

The five-story, 165,000 sq ft headquarters provides a functional and inspirational space for Educational Media Foundation, a global, multi-platform media nonprofit relocating from California. The facility responds to the wide-ranging needs of multiple departments while celebrating the community of employees and listeners. Central to this vision is the 1,100-seat performance venue — designed as a space for worship, gatherings, and pre-function activities — supported by generous open areas.

The project comprises two distinct spaces united by a shared entrance and lobby. Clad in prefabricated facade systems and glass, the buildings embody two ancient Greek interpretations of time: Kronos, the rhythmic passage of time, and Kairos, transformational moments. The design team faced the challenge of translating these abstract concepts into a monumental, expressive facade. Wells partnered with the design team from the earliest design phases to align design intent with constructability, leveraging tools such as Autodesk BIM 360 for real-time coordination — allowing the team to optimize panel design, streamline fabrication, and anticipate installation challenges, ensuring that the complex prefabricated geometry could be delivered efficiently and accurately.

Franklin, TN’s strict architectural regulations required vertical proportions, distinct base-middle-cap segments, and a robust framework. Wells provided the adaptability to meet these form-based zoning requirements without compromising design intent. Backforming techniques reduced panel weight and material use, supported cantilevered sections, allowed corner windows to be unobstructed by columns, and accommodated closed-cell spray foam insulation to create a continuous, energy-efficient envelope. Standardizing panel shapes, minimizing unique forms, and integrating curtainwall embeds into a semi-unitized design accelerated the building’s dry-in, reduced the number of trades required on site, and optimized crane operations and installation costs.

Transportation and installation of complex panels presented challenges. Many panels had centers of gravity outside their physical footprint, requiring careful rigging, rotation, and balancing during transport and erection.

The headquarters reflects the many advantages of prefabrication. Its structural versatility allowed long-span roof systems and open floor plates, enhancing spatial flexibility. Deep chamfered openings and sculptural panels provided dramatic architectural expression, while prefabrication accelerated construction and reduced site disturbance. The combination of thermal efficiency, storm resilience, and durability ensures long-term performance with minimal maintenance, while careful material optimization and standardized formwork delivered cost efficiency without sacrificing quality or design intent.

Through collaboration, technical innovation, and thoughtful execution, Wells helped realize the Educational Media Foundation headquarters — achieving a balance of functional performance, aesthetic presence, and lasting durability, and providing the organization with a space that supports its mission and community while setting a high standard for expressive, enduring architecture.
