Built for Care

The Delores Barr Weaver Heart and Vascular Pavilion was designed as a flexible, future-ready healthcare space that supports both immediate patient care needs and long-term campus growth. The four-level space integrates parking at the lower level, patient care areas at the center levels — including 30 medical and surgical rooms and 30 intensive care rooms — and a roof level currently dedicated to mechanical systems with planned conversion to office space as needs evolve.

Wells partnered with the design team to implement a fully prefabricated structural and facade system that aligned with an aggressive schedule and a constrained site. Off-site construction enabled disciplined quality control and streamlined sequencing, allowing the enclosure of the approximately 58,000 sq ft space in just ten weeks. This efficient approach minimized on-site congestion and reduced trade stacking — critical on a tight campus surrounded by active healthcare operations.

The integrated system incorporates load-bearing walls, columns and floor components designed for both strength and adaptability. Large exterior wall openings — including areas functioning as shear elements — required careful engineering and coordination to maintain performance without compromising architectural intent. Through early collaboration and precise detailing, Wells ensured these complex conditions were addressed seamlessly.

Designed with vertical expansion in mind, the pavilion can accommodate additional levels as future demands arise. This forward-looking strategy reinforces the campus’s long-term resilience, enabling growth without disruption.

By combining prefabrication, disciplined engineering and coordinated execution, Wells delivered a high-performing healthcare space that supported uninterrupted hospital operations while positioning the campus for decades of continued service.
