Resilient Outpatient Cancer Center

Located on the campus of Memorial Hospital West in Pembroke Pines, this 125,000 sq ft, four-story outpatient cancer center reflects a commitment to patient-centered care within a resilient, high-performing healthcare space. The project demonstrates how early collaboration and off-site construction can elevate both architectural expression and long-term performance in a demanding coastal environment.

Originally envisioned with a terracotta rainscreen, the facade strategy evolved through close coordination between the design team and Wells. Together, the team transitioned to a prefabricated building facade system that preserved the richness and depth of the original vision while enhancing durability, reducing maintenance and supporting long-term efficiency — critical considerations for healthcare infrastructure in a hurricane-prone region.

A Layered Design

Building on experience from similarly complex medical spaces, Wells supported the development of a panelized facade approach that introduces visual depth through varied dimensions, layered articulation and multiple finish treatments. The facade responds dynamically to light and shadow, creating movement and texture across all elevations while integrating seamlessly with glass and metal elements to reinforce a contemporary aesthetic.

Digital integration played a central role in refining the solution. Through advanced modeling and coordinated feedback loops, panel layouts were optimized to minimize material waste while maintaining variation and architectural clarity. This disciplined approach streamlined detailing and supported precise execution during production and installation.

Resilience Engineered

Engineered to withstand ultimate wind speeds of 185 mph, the prefabricated facade system exceeds Category 5 hurricane standards, reinforcing long-term resilience. Off-site construction also enabled efficient installation adjacent to a planned hospital expansion, minimizing disruption within an active healthcare campus.

Aligned with the owner’s focus on wellness and sustainability, the project targets LEED v4 certification, with carefully selected materials supporting healthy indoor environments and reduced environmental impact. Through collaboration, digital coordination and performance-driven design, Wells delivered a facade solution that advances expectations for resilient, refined healthcare spaces within the built community.
